Flowering gardens are a beauty to behold and bring enormous satisfaction to those who plant them. Doing ones’ own landscaping has many rewards. Gardens that grow and bloom during all seasons can be a challenge, but in many gardening zones, a little planning and the right mix of flora makes this possible.

Blooms Burst In Winter
Crocus often thrust tiny, delicate blooms through the snow in winter, making them a must have for your garden. They rarely get taller than four inches, so place them around the edges of your beds, or scatter throughout for ground-hugging beauty. Some hybrid varieties bloom as early as November. Plant Pansies in coordinating colors. Evergreen shrubs may compliment your winter landscape, especially when sparkling with ice. Ornamentation in the garden is more visible at this time of year; add benches, statues and seasonal decorations.

Spring Blossoms
Narcissus, Daffodils and Jonquils present an early spring show and are great for naturalizing. Hybrids offer an abundance of shapes and colors and require little care. These multiply yearly. If you have enough space, consider forms of Pussy Willow and Witch Hazel, also early bloomers. Pansies and Violas work well with these combinations.

Spring flowering bulbs are a must for a beautiful landscape. Asiatic Lilies come in a variety of colors and bloom early in spring. Tulips make an early showing as well. Corms and tubers, such as Dahlias, Daylilies, and Iris blooms follow and add to your display. Azaleas offer a bushy option, as does the March Bell bush.

Planting seeds instead of buying the actual plant can be a money-saving option. Start seeds indoors and replant outside for earlier bloom, or plant outside after danger of frost has passed in your area. Variety allows you to display your personality through your blossoms. Using seeds provides an unlimited selection.

Look though catalogs and plan your color scheme. Daisies, Marigolds and Calendulas are hardy choices for the beginning and accomplished gardener. Cosmos, with its’ frilly foliage, makes a great blossom for the back of your area. These hardy annuals can reach six feet and may bloom until frost.

Summer Showings
Ready-to-flower plants can be intermingled with seeds. Gaillardias and Gerber Daisies are popular and require little more than feeding, watering, and deadheading. Evening Primroses add fragrance as well as beauty.
Summer flowering bulbs, such as Gladiolus and Snow Drops should be planted in early spring for summer bloom. Cannas and Calla lilies have dramatic foliage and beautiful flowers. The many shapes and shades of Coleus allows your landscape to make a striking statement. Plant flowers and bulbs in waves instead of rows for a more dramatic effect.

Crisp Autumn Beauty
Autumn flowering plants are more of a challenge, particularly in the higher zones. Colchicums and Cyclamens will bloom in late August through November. If your area experiences early freezes, cover the plants for protection. Make sure to uncover before the sun can burn them.

The hardy Mum is a fall garden classic. Colors and varieties allow dramatic combinations. Asters, Pansies and the edible Viola add texture and contrast.

Experiment with different plants and flowers until you find your perfect combinations. These methods allow you to find what works best in your garden. Be sure to check sun requirements for different varieties and always start with a rich, well-drained soil for best results. Enjoy the satisfaction of nature’s beauty under your design.

Some time in the middle of recession from the recent financial crisis, the concept of staycation came about. Staycation is a shortened version of stay-at-home vacation. The term can now be found in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. When going somewhere for a vacation is already expensive, the wise move is to make your home a vacation haven.

The idea of going on a vacation is to relax and unwind. When you think about it, the backyard is a nice place to do such an activity. A relaxing vacation can be achieved in your backyard with few creative touches.

The Lounge Area

Find a reclining chair in your living room. Move it to a shady area in your backyard so you have a place to relax, sip drinks, and read books. Have a picnic in your backyard if you have a nice lawn area. All you need are pillows and a blanket. The soft grass can act as a cushion. If your kids have outgrown their single beds, those will be ideal lounging furniture. Choose brightly-covered pillows and you’ll easily transport yourself to some vacation paradise.

The Dining Area

Your staycation will even feel like an island vacation if you eat outside. An inviting table setting can easily make any simple meal sumptuous. Use practical and casual dinnerware. You do not want to use your fine china in this one. Light snacks during the day under the cool breeze are filling and relaxing. Light up some candles when it gets dark and you’ll have a romantic candlelit dinner. Open a bottle of wine and play good music and you will never feel you are just vacationing at home.

The Backyard Barbecue

Invite friends over when you’re done fixing up the place. Grilled veggies and meat during the hot summer afternoon paired with cool, refreshing drinks are a wonderful way to gather with friends. Do not sweat the details. Use plates, dishes and utensils you can easily slip into the dishwasher. Just prepare paper towels and spray bottles filled with water and detergent for easy cleanup.

Camping Out

Skies are clear during summer time. It is ideal for stargazing. Kids will learn constellations and astronomy. Camping out in your own backyard eliminates the troubles in having to prepare for a trip away from home. You can still enjoy the outdoors without the rigors associated with setting up camp in unfamiliar territories. You still need to protect everyone from bugs so those anti-repellent lotions still come in handy. Set up a fire and roast hotdogs and marshmallows. Tell stories and play games with your kids.

Staycation is not a bad idea. If your know how to create a relaxing and fun place in your own backyard, you do not need to travel for a vacation.

There are so many ways that you can create a garden, so. ultimately it comes down to personal preference. There are a few basic garden styles that you can follow. Make sure when you choose a style that you consider the architecture of your home. A formal garden will not necessarily be the best choice for a cottage style home. Also, consider the color of the items in your yard, the fence, any outbuildings. The color of your home and it’s trim are also important factors. There are five general garden styles.

Formal
The formal garden has a long history. French or Italianate gardens feature strong symmetry. Asian or Islamic gardens have strong geometric patterns. A formal design will have strong defined lines and edges. Paving and paths are central and will lead the eye to some kind of specimen plant or other garden element, such as a statue.

Hedges and shrubs are prevalent. They should be trimmed into symmetrical shapes such as pyramids, balls and boxes. Formal gardens are frequently monochromatic in color. Often they will be one single color, like white.

Informal/Casual
The goal of the informal garden is to soften the boundaries between the home and the garden. An informal garden will have winding paths, and mounded groups of plants. The casual garden will include more potted plants and beds with mixed flowers. Large shrubs should be used as a backdrop for plants. The casual garden should have a relaxed and inviting feeling.

Contemporary
Contemporary gardens use shapes that include circles, ovals and triangles. Geometric beds can be used, but the plantings should appear to have a bit of organized chaos. Often architectural features of a home, (I.E. oval windows), will be copied into the garden. House trim color is also copied with the flower color.

Also present are living walls covered with climbing vines, container groupings that mirror bed shapes, and newly introduced plants. The contemporary garden is also a great place for espalier’s and topiary’s. The topiary’s should be trimmed into free-form triangles and ball shapes. Of most importance is that this style remain fluid. A contemporary garden is a “blend of traditional style with modern design principles.” (Flower Gardening; Julie Bawden-Davis; 2004)

Natural
The ultimate goal for a natural garden is to replicate nature. Major features include groupings of odd numbered plants, plantings in layers and levels, and native flowering plants. A natural garden should also include plants that attract wildlife, like birds and bee’s. Keep in mind when creating a natural garden that room should be left for a compost pile or bin. A natural garden should also be free of harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Combination
The combination style of gardening is perhaps the most difficult to do successfully. This type of garden requires experience. A successful combination garden will have many aspects of different styles woven together. The best way to approach this design is either to plan it right from the start, or experiment as you go. Begin by choosing one of the classic styles that works for you. Transition this style slowly into a combination garden.

The above garden styles will add flair to your garden. By choosing a style that you enjoy you will add cohesion to your garden, inviting people in to experience it’s pleasures.

Every homeowner eventually wants to make a change, but if you’re like many people you haven’t a clue where to begin. Just like fashion styles, interior designs change with the times as well. So, if you’ve been in your home for a long time and are ready to sell or are just ready for a makeover, read on to see if the hottest trends are suitable for your home.

Go ahead and slap a fresh coat of paint on the walls. But don’t make it sterile white or boring beige. At the very least use these colors along with some vibrant accent colors on a single wall or two.

“We’ve gone through an era of everything being very muted and quiet and what we see with the younger generation coming up is that we’re really going to use lots of colors. Colors on the walls, color on the furniture such as lime greens, browns, oranges and bright reds,” says Dixie Lovejoy, owner of Arizona-based Apple Interior Systems, Inc.

A little paint can make a major change to a home. It’s always a good idea to put on a fresh coat or at least touch up the paint before you place your home on the market. It gives a buyer a feeling of cleanliness and that the home has been well cared for over the years.

“Paint is a very inexpensive way to do something new and not have your house seem dated as time goes on,” adds Lovejoy.

Think big, but buy less. “People used to buy accessories on a very small scale. In our office, one of our slogans is: bigger is better,” says Lovejoy.

She says that means things like pots, statues, fountains, and flower arrangements should all be bigger. So instead of having a lot of knickknack items, you buy less but when you do, you buy big. The idea is to make a statement with your decorating rather than make your home look cluttered.

Accent pillows are a must! The key home décor ingredient that no home should be without gives new meaning to pillow talk. Lovejoy says accent pillows will get your houseguest chatting about your harmonizing décor. “Accent pillows are kind of a key to all design that ties everything together,” she says.

Bye-bye sliders. In my opinion, sliding glass doors have always been a bit of an eyesore, but so many tract homes have them. Now, Lovejoy says, sliding glass and even French doors are losing ground. The new alternative creates wide open space even in a residential tract home. Instead, doors that virtually vanish or disappear are appearing in more homes and allowing better access to the great outdoors.

“They actually can slide all the way into a pocket that’s built into a wall or stack on top of each other so it becomes one small window on the left or right side but the rest of your house is all open. There are also folding doors that do that,” says Lovejoy.

She says the typical narrow three-foot opening on sliding or French doors just isn’t suitable for what homeowners want today. “The newest trend is opening up a 12 to 22 or 30 feet of glass. It gives you almost the lanai effect like you have in Hawaii where the inside and the outside all become one,” explains Lovejoy.

Of course, this is ideal for homeowners who have big parties or events at their home. “You can just open up your house and the traffic flows inside to outside,” says Lovejoy.

Then the outside is decorated much like the inside with fireplaces, couches, chairs, coffee tables, and Lovejoy says even drapes and pictures hanging on the walls on the outside of the house. All of this makes the determining line between the outside and inside of your house disappear.

Furnish your outdoors like your indoors.

“We traditionally don’t even use regular patio furniture. We upholster couches and chairs and everything in outside fabric because it’s gotten so incredibly intricate. It’s not the old red, white, and blue fabric that we used to think of for outdoor furniture,” says Lovejoy.

Today, designers are using big patterns made from velvets and even sheer materials on outside furniture which begs the question, “how does this fabric hold up on a couch or chair?”

“We’re the toughest market there is with the weather and everything else … and we’re the dustbowl of the world out here but even the moisture that you have in the costal cities wouldn’t affect it,” says Lovejoy. Need to clean your furniture? Don’t hire a professional. Lovejoy says, “You can take a hose to it and wash off the couch or chairs or you can vacuum them just like you do inside so there’s really no difference.”

When it comes to flooring, soft is out and hard is in. “I think that we’re going away from soft surfaces on the flooring,” says Lovejoy.

Traditionally, homes have always had carpeting in the bedroom areas and maybe tile or hardwood flooring in other parts of the house. That’s changing to create a better flow between the indoor and outdoor living areas. “That way when you open up your house for entertaining, the patio or the lanai on the outside, or your sunroom, has the same surface as the house so you get that huge expanded feeling,” says Lovejoy.

Of course, area rugs are making a huge impact in the marketplace because of homeowners wanting to have some cozy, soft areas on the floor near beds, couches, and fireplaces. Even just a few changes to your home can take it from drab to fabulous with these hot trends.

Fall is the time to look over your home and prepare it for winter. Read more for a few tips.

Fall Home Improvements

Fall is an important time to weather-proof your home. Cooler air is working its way across the country, and that means some home maintenance is in order.

Here are a few items you should attend to this season.

1. Trim back nonflowering bushes: These plants are headed into their dormant stage, and that means you can get in one last trim before cold weather.

2. Mums the word: Chrysanthemums are a great way to keep your front step colorful and inviting. Find your favorite color at your local plant nursery!

3. Fall cleaning: Clean-up isn’t just for Spring anymore. Fall is prime time to pick up and put away gardening tools, summer toys, and pool supplies. Take advantage of the beautiful and temperate weather by tidying up your yard.

4. Seasonal items: Welcome mats and wreaths are easy ways to add a warm and welcoming touch to your home.

5. Storm windows. Champions of keeping in heat on cold days, storm windows are something you can install on your own. To install, remove and store your screens. Clean out the window tracks. And then use a little spray lubrication to make the storm windows slide more easily into place.

6. Clean the gutters. Throughout the season, leaves will fill your gutters. Be sure to keep your gutters clear of debris so that rain water does not do damage to your home.

7. Chimneys: Have each chimney cleaned and checked for cracks and leaks. A chimney fire would put a real damper on your holidays!

8. Change filters: This should be done every 3 months, if not more frequently. Filters cost just dollars, and clean ones mean fewer allergens in your air.

9. Heater servicing: After sitting for a year, your unit will need serviced. This will ensure it runs smoothly when you really need it.

10. Hot water heater: Use Fall as the time to drain your hot water heater and to remove sediment from the bottom. This will improve your unit’s efficiency.

Enjoy the cooler weather and get that home in order!

Composting made easy in your own back yard. Read more on how to set up your own compost pile.

Compost is an excellent fertilizer

Making your own compost is one of the best things you can do for your garden. Compost is not only an excellent fertilizer and soil amendment but it’s also free. Composting is a natural biological process that converts organic material into humus-like matter that gardeners refer to as “black gold.”

You can make your own backyard compost container from welded wire mesh, concrete blocks or wooden shipping pallets—anything in which you can form a pile of compost material that’s roughly 3–5 feet across and no higher than 5 feet.

However, it’s easier to buy a commercial compost bin with features that make turning the contents easier, thus speeding up the decomposing process. The Home Depot carries compost bins by brands such as Exaco Trading Co., some units made from recycled plastic and the world’s first continuous-cycle compost bin. This 3-bin compost allows you to add new waste from the top while removing mature compost at the bottom.

Step 1: Mix it
Place the bin near your garden and back door. A small indoor bin is handy to use along with the larger one outdoors. Throw scraps into the indoor bin and, as it fills up, empty it periodically into the outdoor one. Compostable items such as kitchen scraps, tea bags, coffee grinds and grass clippings can be added to the bin; so can brown materials such as dried leaves, sawdust, straw, wood ash and the woody stalks of plants.

Step 2: Layer it
Layer materials high in carbon, including lawn clippings, chopped leaves, green plants and agricultural crop residues with materials high in nitrogen, such as manure, alfalfa meal, hay, paper products, sewage sludge and wood. Just about any organic material can be added to the bedding, including food scraps, eggshells, tea leaves and coffee grounds. Never add chemically treated wood, diseased plants, human or pet waste, meat, bones, fatty foods or weeds. Add water regularly during the compost-building process and after it’s done, letting it trickle into the pile to help get rid of air pockets.

Step 3: Turn it
You can begin to make compost in as little as a few weeks if you speed up the process by turning the pile with a pitchfork once a week and adding fresh manure. Mixing it allows oxygen into the center of the pile, encouraging the growth of bacteria and fungi, which break down organic material into simpler substances. Regularly turned organic matter will become finished compost in 4–8 months.

Step 4: Break it down
Compost is ready to be used when it is dark and crumbly and has an earthy smell. You can sift it to separate material that hasn’t finished composting, but those pieces will continue to decompose in your garden. The smaller the pieces, the faster they will break down.

Step 5: Spread it
Once it’s ready, work the compost into the soil to give it an organic boost before planting. Spread it on the soil’s surface as mulch on flower beds and around the base of landscape plants. Compost may also be used as a top dressing for lawns or as an ingredient in potting mixes. For more great eco-friendly tips, check out the Healthy Homes tab on the Eco Options website.

Top Ten plants as described by a garden designer and horticulturist.

As a garden designer and horticulturist I have to admit that my top ten plants varies. This is because it very much depends on the current projects, moods and atmospheres I am creating but there are a few perennial favorites.

1) Meconopsis- I love these because of the vibrant color they add to any garden design. They are nearly all blue but what a blue! In shades from blue of bright blue skies down to azures and china blues, there is no dull plant among them. The Himalayan poppy as it is otherwise known comes in many varieties and the flowers last days ,unlike other floppy flowered species. In Scotland one soul has carpeted an entire hillside in the plants creating a dazzling effect. So vibrant is their blue that you can use them as focal , punctuation or color block plants.

2) Carnations – standards of form, consistent and neat, carnations add to and enhance any color scheme. From low growers to tall, robust stands, these flowers offer no-nonsense growth and color. Easy to grow and propagate from pipe cuttings, they grow in most sites and soils.

3) Davidii involucre – the Handkerchief tree with its huge white flower bracts making it look like doves or paper hankies are in the branches, what attracts me about this tree is not only its compact and neat form but the story behind its discovery which adds an air of mysticism. David, after whom it was named, searched for the plant. Every time he came to where it was last reported, the last stand had ‘just been cut’ so he ventured deeper and deeper into the hills to obtain his specimen, which he did finally and brought it back to Europe. His adventures are mind-blowing and his discovery all the more interesting for them.

4) Lavender – versatile, fragrant, attractive to insects, this plant can be grown tall, clipped, in hedges or as a focal plant. Lavenders add to any planting design and can offer features for those with visual impairments as the scent and feel make it a very individual plant. Silvery leaves and vivid blue flowers make an attractive combination and lavender can be used in any garden and most soils.

5) Gunnera manicata – large, hand like leaves atop tall spiked stems make this the most magnificent bog side plant. Huge and invasive though it can be, it can change the atmosphere of a garden and create deep green depths of plantings. Slightly menacing and simply enormous, the palm like leaves enfold you almost in their hugeness. Awe inspiring in its growth and sheer volume of plant. You can get dwarf gunnera too but the full size one, if it can fit, is truly magnificent.

6) Crab apple – a truly useful tree all year round, the blossom comes in February followed by leaves in march, then fruit which start orange and swell to deep red. The fruit feed birds through the winter and will last until the final one is eaten- around January, just before the blossom starts again. Bark can be attractive with green and red tones so this tree is useful and hard working in any garden. Dwarf varieties make it suitable for most sites.

7) Eryngium – the truly architectural medium sized plant – this adds form and texture to any garden plan. Sensuous, spiked and with wonderful seed heads which look fantastic as they trap frost on cold mornings, a true masterpiece of form all year round.

Camellia japonica- with varieties of white, pink or red shades, this is the show off heralding the start of spring. One of the earliest to flower, this showy, blowzy shrub needs acidic soil but in the right place will blossom for years and create a truly heart stopping display. The deep green of the leaves only serve to set the colors of the flowers off. Like a shy bride, this shrub suddenly bursts into flower overnight almost- a real stunner.

9) Rosa ‘Peace’ the wonderfully formed, almost perfect flower of the Peace rose with hints of apricot, pink, orange and gold, this is the true stunner of roses.

10) Chrysanthemums so many flower forms, so many plant forms, this is a true versatile, clown prince of display. From dwarf to tall, reticulate to double pom poms or spooned flowers, the range of colors, size and form is incredible. Often bred but with older varieties still around, this attracts insects, create cut flowers and blooms late in the year – what more could you want?

This is my top ten at the moment but I also adore digitalis, with their amazing self seeding, glorious flowers with their bee paths to direct the insects to their nectaries, the climbing roses, the honeysuckle, Campsis (trumpet creeper), Tulips, apricot trees in blossom and so many other wonderful plants to choose from. This is why my top ten changes and plants slip in and out of it. No doubt it will change again as I find even more plants. Plants never cease to provide an endless source of amazement and variety.

To create a unique landscape design, certain elements must be combined according to the homeowner's taste.

Creative landscape design draws attention to homes, making them look not only attractive, but well cared for. To create a unique landscape design, certain elements must be combined according to the homeowner’s taste. These may include hardscape items like ponds, waterfalls, and fountains, or simpler items like stones and plants. Having a basic understanding of landscape design makes getting started much easier.

Use Software
An original vision can look different – sometimes unsightly – once it’s finally finished. That’s where landscape design software comes in. This lets users upload photos or build virtual replicas of their house and yard, then create a preview of the changes soon to take place outside. These programs save homeowners and professionals alike from disaster.

Be Picky about Plants
Choose items that have already proven useful and gorgeous. Certain staples have become popular over the years. Of course, trees and shrubs are two of them. Planting coniferous trees and shrubs will guarantee year-round beauty. The inclusion of deciduous trees will spice things up by adding color and diversity. To help sunlight reach every plant, the tallest should be planted northernmost, and the shortest should be planted southernmost.

Shop at Nurseries
Quality trees and plants can be purchased at nurseries, and though they cost less elsewhere, the savings are not worth the trouble. Annuals and perennials can also be found at nurseries, and if a flowerbed is part of the landscape plan, having both is crucial for continuity and extra color. Having an equal amount of rows throughout the entire landscape will create unity.

Invest in Hardscape
Hardscape items create beauty in winter, when so many other additions have already withered away. An elegant landscape lighting design will help add security and property value to a home. A low-voltage landscape lighting design (12 volts) seems to be the most obvious choice. Other options include waterfalls and fountains, which can be especially costly, but their soothing sounds and aesthetic appeal are worth the going rate. For a finishing touch, a fence gives most landscapes a completed look.

Choose the Worker Bee
Do-it-yourself landscape design works for those willing to spend ample time learning and laboring. It’s also much more cost-efficient than employing an expert. Anyone interested can join a landscape design program at certain schools or online, but those who don’t have the necessary patience or stamina for this kind of project should forgo the training and hire a professional.

A salsa garden is a terrific project for the beginning gardener. All of the plants you will need are simple to grow, especially if you start with purchased plants from a garden center.

A salsa garden is a terrific project for the beginning gardener. All of the plants you will need are simple to grow, especially if you start with purchased plants from a garden center.

Preparation
You’ll need a bit of earth in full sun, about 10 feet by 10 feet. In garden that size you can grow two tomato plants, two pepper plants, onions, cilantro, and garlic. To prepare your garden, dig the soil to a depth of 8 or 10 inches. Add a couple of bags of compost, dig it in, and rake the soil smooth. Make a path down the middle from north to south.

Planting
Garlic is planted in the fall. To plant, break the bulb into separate cloves and plant the cloves separately along the west and east sides of your patch. Harvest in late summer.

Tomato plants should be planted in early summer, well after the last predicted frost date. Buy an early and a late variety for summer-long harvest. Place the plants at the north end of your patch on either side of the path, and support them with sturdy tomato cages.

For peppers, you can choose anything from fiery habaneros to sweet and mild “Fooled You.” Pepper plants should be planted at the same time as tomatoes. Place them in front of the tomato plants so they get full sun.

Onions can be grown from seeds or from sets. Seeds should be planted very early in the spring, after the soil thaws. Sets can be planted a little later. Plant several short rows in front of the peppers.

Sow cilantro seed on finely-raked soil at the south end of the garden, in front of your onions, after the last frost date.

Care
Water deeply, making sure you soak the soil to a depth of several inches. Water again when the soil is dry down to about an inch below the soil surface. To conserve water and smother weeds, mulch with several inches of chopped leaves or straw. Keep the weeds pulled so they don’t compete with your plants. The compost you dug into the garden bed will provide plenty of nutrition for most of the season, but tomatoes and peppers will benefit if you dig a little organic fertilizer into the soil halfway through the growing season.

Salsa Time!
Once your tomatoes and peppers begin producing, you should have early onions, garlic, and cilantro ready for harvest. Here’s one recipe for turning your produce into fresh, delicious salsa:

3 cloves of garlic, minced
3 tablespoons chopped onion
3 medium or 2 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped
2 peppers, finely chopped
2 tablespoons cilantro, minced
2 tablespoons lime juice
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix the ingredients in a glass or ceramic bowl. Refrigerate several hours before serving to allow the flavors to blend.

Remodeling trends have changed recently in light of the troubled economy and the strong focus on greener living. The new catchphrase in remodeling is “smart, sustainable luxury.”

Remodeling trends have changed recently in light of the troubled economy and the strong focus on greener living. The new catchphrase in remodeling is “smart, sustainable luxury.” When people update or upgrade their homes, they’re opting for smarter rather than bigger. Building with eco-friendly materials, choosing more efficient appliances, but not skimping on luxury. Homeowners are turning their home from a place to stay into a place to live.

Outside the home, an outdoor living space has become a necessary extension of indoor living space. Renovating the yard from lawn to paved party area expands entertainment space. Fire pits make outdoor entertaining in the colder months possible, and outdoor kitchens and bars bring the functionality of the house out into the yard. The addition of pools, hot tubs, and saunas multiplies the activity options available and creates a sanctuary of life and rejuvenation.

Outdoor entrances are receiving more attention these days. Gone are the old concrete sidewalk paths. New stone pavers lead visitors to entrances that have been updated with stonework, columns, and covered porticoes. Upgrades to front exterior spaces can add curb appeal and value and set the home apart from the competition.

Indoors, kitchens are still the heart of the home and rank high on most renovation lists. New kitchens are designed with entertaining in mind. The kitchen space is traditionally the greatest energy consumer and waste producer in the home. New high-efficiency appliances dramatically reduce energy usage in the kitchen. Built-in composters turn food scraps into useful fertilizer for gardens or houseplants.

In keeping with the trends toward greener living, many updated finish choices are also available. These can range from expensive stone and granite to synthetic materials that offer the look and durability of stone at a fraction of the price. Wood finishes have also changed.

Many older building materials, such as medium-density fibreboard (MDF) or pressboard, can give off harmful chemicals. Recycled or sustainable woods with eco-friendly finishes and nontoxic paints have become popular choices.

Master bedrooms and baths have changed from utilitarian spaces to private getaways. No longer a place to just wash up, the master bath can be upgraded with luxuries like doorless showers with multiple shower heads, spa tubs, heated flooring, and other spa-like comforts. Tankless water heaters offer a continuous supply of hot water for quiet baths or long, hot showers, as well as dramatic energy cost savings.

The Internet, wireless communications, and other advancing computer technologies have freed many people from having to go into the office every day. Dedicated home office suites provide both the necessary separation from home life that is required for productivity and a stress-free commute.

Living/family rooms have evolved into flexible entertainment areas that do more than provide a place to sit and watch TV. As the interactivity levels of video-game systems increases, more space is needed to jump, run, ski, and exercise.

Let your home-improvement specialist help you update your space.
